How to Make Your Telehealth Appointment Easy and Stress-free

Preparing for a Telehealth Appointment

Many health appointments are now virtual, or telehealth, appointments. Telehealth appointments allow you to meet with your doctor or provider from your own home, or wherever you happen to be, either on a video call or an audio-only phone call. While telehealth appointments can be quite convenient, they require some extra preparation to make sure the appointment goes as smoothly as possible. Read more to learn how to prepare and what to expect during your appointment to make sure it is easy and stress-free.

Before Your Telehealth Appointment

Review this checklist to make sure you have everything you need:

  • Device: You will need a phone, tablet, or computer with a microphone. If your telehealth appointment is a video call, make sure your device has a camera. Charge your device ahead of time or keep it plugged in during the call.
  • Reliable Connection: Make sure you have a stable phone, internet, or Wi-Fi connection to prevent disruptions during your call.
  • Quiet, Private Space: Choose a place where you can talk comfortably and without interruptions. If you’re at home, consider being in a room alone or asking others to use headphones.
  • Notetaking: Have a pen and paper or another way to take notes during your appointment.
  • Access to the Appointment: Make sure you know how to join the appointment, whether it’s through a phone call, an app, or a website. Contact your clinic if you need instructions.

What to Expect During Your Telehealth Appointment

  • Log in early: Many providers recommend signing in at least 15 minutes before your appointment in case of technical difficulties.
  • Discussion with your provider: Your telehealth appointment will function like an in-person visit. Your provider will discuss your health, provide recommendations, and answer your questions.
  • Technical issues may happen: If you have trouble seeing or hearing your provider, let them know immediately.

Telehealth appointments can be a convenient and easy way to meet with your doctor or provider.
