Tablets Can Help with Telehealth

Why a Tablet Might Be the Best Choice for Telehealth

A tablet is a mobile device with a touchscreen. It’s bigger than a smartphone but smaller than a laptop. Tablets can do many of the same things as a smartphone, including using the internet, taking pictures, downloading apps, and more.

Tablets can also be very useful for telehealth appointments. Read on to learn why using a tablet might be a great option for your next virtual healthcare visit.

The Tablet Itself

The physical features of a tablet can make it a practical choice for many people:

  • Larger screen: Tablets have much bigger screens than smartphones, which can be beneficial for those with vision impairments. Even for those without impairments, a larger screen makes it easier to view information clearly.
  • Keyboard and mouse support: Many tablets can connect to an external keyboard and mouse, making them feel more like a desktop computer. This can make navigation easier and allow for faster typing during telehealth chats.

Connectivity

Telehealth appointments require a stable internet connection. Tablets often provide two options for internet access: a data plan and/or Wi-Fi.

  • 5G data plans: Many tablets now support 5G, which can be 10–100 times faster than 4G. A strong connection ensures smooth video and audio quality, reducing lag and interruptions during your appointment.
  • Wi-Fi access: If a tablet doesn’t have a 5G plan or if the connection is unstable, it can connect to Wi-Fi instead. Likewise, if Wi-Fi is weak, switching to a data plan can provide a more reliable connection.

Telehealth and Health Apps

With an internet connection, tablets can run the same health-related apps as smartphones, including:

  • Telehealth platforms for video calls with healthcare providers
  • Patient portals to view medical records, schedule appointments, and communicate with doctors
  • Health-tracking apps for monitoring symptoms, medication schedules, and fitness
